Custom fields

Add extra fields such as author or category to every page of a site, and fill them in on each page.

Custom fields are extra details every page on a site carries: an author, a hero image, a category, an event date. You set them up once per site, and writers fill them in on each page. Your website reads them alongside the page.

Before you start: Setting up fields needs Website content at Full control. Filling them in needs Can write drafts.

Add fields

  1. Open Site settings › Custom fields. Or, from a page, open the Page tab and click Add fields (or Edit fields once some exist).
  2. Click Add field.
  3. Enter a Label, for example "Author".
  4. Check the Field ID. It is filled in from the label as lowercase letters, digits and underscores. You can change it by hand. It must start with a letter and be at most 40 characters. Your developers read the field by this ID.
  5. Pick a Type.
  6. Optionally add Help text and turn on Required to publish.
  7. Click Save.

You can have up to 30 fields. Use the up and down arrows to reorder them and the X to remove one.

Required fields

A field set to Required to publish shows a star in the page's Page tab. A draft can be half-filled, but a page cannot go live until every required field has a value. A Yes / no field is never counted as missing.

What happens next

  • The fields show in the Page tab of every page on the site.
  • Removing a field takes it off every page's Page tab. Restoring an older version drops values that no longer match a current field.
  • A value that does not fit its type, such as text in a Number field, is refused when the page is saved.

Troubleshooting

"needs a key" or "Two fields use the key" Every field needs a unique ID starting with a letter. Fix the highlighted ID.
