Spaces

The kinds of Drive space (personal, team, everyone), and how to create, open and delete one.

A space is a top-level place for files. This page explains the kinds of space and how to create or delete one.

Kinds of space

Kind (badge) Who can open it
Personal Only you, until you share a folder from it.
Everyone The whole workspace. Access comes from roles. There is one, and it cannot be deleted.
Team space The people whose roles include it.
Member Another member's personal space. You only see these as the workspace owner.

Your first personal space is My Drive. It is created for you and cannot be deleted. Extra personal spaces you create can be deleted by you or by the owner.

Steps: create a space

Before you start: anyone can create a personal space. A Team space needs Full control on Files (or being the owner).

  1. Open Drive › Spaces and click New space (also on Home).
  2. If you can create team spaces, choose Just for me or Team space. Otherwise you create a personal space.
  3. For a team space, type a Short name: lowercase letters, digits and hyphens, 2 to 63 characters, for example finance. Roles refer to the space by this name. org and names starting with user- are reserved.
  4. Type a Name. It is required for a personal space. For a team space it falls back to the short name.
  5. Click Create. The new space opens and you see "Space created".

Open a space

Click a card on Spaces. Cards are grouped as Your spaces, Organization and Members' drives. Each card shows the kind badge, a storage bar and the size. Right-click for Open, Open in new tab and Delete space.

Delete a space

  1. Right-click the space card › Delete space.
  2. Confirm "Delete ""? It must be empty first."

Important: a space must be empty before it can be deleted. If it is not, you get "bucket is not empty". Delete its files and folders first.

Who can delete what

  • Personal spaces: the owner, or the workspace owner. Never My Drive.
  • Team spaces: the workspace owner or anyone with Full control on that space.
  • The Everyone space: nobody.
