Delivery statuses and reports

What each status in the delivery log means, and how delivery reports from your provider update it.

Sending is not instant: a message is queued, handed to your provider, and later your provider tells AxisIQ what happened. The status in Activity shows how far it got.

Statuses

Status Meaning
Queued Saved and waiting to be handed to your provider.
Sending Being handed to your provider now.
Sent Your provider accepted it.
Delivered Your provider confirms it reached the recipient.
Read The recipient opened it, where the provider reports this.
Bounced The address could not be reached.
Marked as spam The recipient reported it as spam.
Failed It never reached the provider, or the provider refused it. The message shows the reason.
Not sent The recipient is on your suppression list, so nothing was sent.

Delivered, Read, Bounced and Marked as spam only appear if your provider reports them.

How reports reach AxisIQ

When you connect an account whose provider reports delivery, AxisIQ gives you a web address. You paste it into your provider's own console, where the dialog tells you exactly where to go. See Providers. Once that is done, the provider calls the address whenever something happens.

You can see the address again at any time: open the account's Edit dialog under Channels and look for Delivery reports.

Important: Treat the delivery-report web address like a password. It proves a report really came from your provider. Do not share it.

Rules the statuses follow

  • Statuses only move forward, from Queued towards Delivered or Read. Reports often arrive out of order, so a late "delivered" never undoes a bounce.
  • A Bounced or Marked as spam result adds the address to your suppression list automatically.
  • SMTP servers report nothing back, so SMTP messages stop at Sent.
  • If your provider rejects messages because of a bad or revoked key, the account's health on Channels changes to show the error.

Troubleshooting

Messages never leave "Sent" The delivery-report web address has not been added at your provider, or the provider does not report that status. Check the account's setup in Providers.

A message stays on "Sending" It is being handed to your provider. If it stays there, check your provider and your account's health on Channels.
