Field types

The answer types a form question can have, what people see for each, and what a form cannot collect.

Each question has an Answer type. The menu lists the type names below. Forms use the same types and checks as record fields, so what a form accepts is what a record field accepts.

Types

Answer type What people see Notes
string A one-line text box. The default for a new question.
text A larger, multi-line box. For messages and comments.
number A number box. Decimals allowed.
bool A checkbox. Ticked means yes.
date A date picker.
datetime A date and time picker.
currency An amount with a currency. The currency defaults to your workspace's default currency.
select A dropdown of your options. You must give at least one option.
multiselect A box where people choose several options. You must give at least one option.
email A text box for an email address. The answer is checked to be a valid email address.
url A text box for a web address. The answer is checked to be a valid web address.

For select and multiselect, type one option per line under Options.

What a form cannot collect

These are not offered, because they would need a lookup into your data or a file path that a public page should not have:

  • Links to other records.
  • File uploads.
  • Auto-numbered fields, which the system fills itself.
  • Computed (formula) fields, which the system calculates.

When you build a form from a record type, these fields are skipped. The builder tells you how many it left out.

Required and checking answers

  • A question marked Required must have an answer. The message reads " is required".
  • Every answer is checked against its type before it is saved. If one is wrong, the person sees a message naming the question and can fix it.
  • A question left blank and not required is simply not stored.

Question names

Every question has a field key. It uses lowercase letters, digits and underscores, starts with a letter, and is up to 63 characters. Keys must be unique on the form. Keys starting with an underscore are reserved.
