Free GSTIN validator

Check a GST number before it goes on an invoice. Type or paste a GSTIN and the tool tells you whether it is correctly formed. It checks the length, the state code, the PAN inside it and the check digit, then reads out the state and the type of business. Paste a whole list to check up to 500 at once. It runs in your browser: nothing is sent or stored, and there is no sign-up.

How to check a GSTIN

  1. Type or paste the GSTIN. Spaces and dashes are ignored, and lower case is fine.
  2. Press Check GSTIN. You see at once whether the number is valid and, if not, which part is wrong.
  3. Checking many? Choose A list of GSTINs and paste them one per line, or separated by commas. You get a table you can sort, with the invalid ones easy to pick out.

What a GSTIN is made of

A GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) has 15 characters, and every part means something:

Characters Example What it is
1–2 27 State code of the registration (27 = Maharashtra)
3–12 AAPFU0939F The holder's PAN (a tax deductor's TAN for TDS registrations)
13 1 Which registration this is for the same PAN in that state (1–9, then A–Z)
14 Z A letter, Z by default
15 V Check digit, worked out from the first 14 characters

The 4th letter of the PAN tells you who holds it: P individual or proprietor, C company, F firm or LLP, H Hindu undivided family, A association of persons, T trust, G government, L local authority, B body of individuals, J artificial juridical person.

How the check digit works

The last character is calculated from the other 14 with a mod-36 checksum. Each character is turned into a number (0–9, then A = 10 … Z = 35), every second one is doubled, and the results are folded into a single character. Swap two characters or mistype one and the check digit almost always stops matching, which is why this check catches most typing mistakes.

Frequently asked questions

Does a valid result mean the business is registered? It means the number is correctly formed. A correctly formed GSTIN can still be cancelled, suspended or belong to a different business. To see the legal name and whether it is active, use Search Taxpayer on the GST portal (services.gst.gov.in).

Why check the format at all, then? Most wrong GSTINs on invoices are typing mistakes. A wrong GSTIN on a B2B invoice means your customer can't claim the input tax credit, and fixing it later means amending your GSTR-1. Checking the format catches the mistake before the invoice goes out.

Is my data sent anywhere? No. The check runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to us or stored.

Can I check a list from Excel? Yes. Copy the GSTIN column from your sheet and paste it into A list of GSTINs. Up to 500 are checked at once.
