Free HSN code finder

Find the HSN code for a product or the SAC code for a service. Search the official list of more than 22,000 codes by name or by the first few digits, see where each code sits in the tariff, and see the usual GST rate where one applies. Free, no sign-up.

How to find an HSN code

  1. Type what you sell, in simple words: "cotton shirt", "cement", "laptop". Or type the first digits of a code you already have, like 8471.
  2. Pick goods or services to narrow it down. Goods use HSN codes, services use SAC codes.
  3. Read the match. Each result shows the code, its level in the tariff (chapter, heading, sub-heading or tariff item), the headings above it and, where the tool knows one, the usual GST rate. Copy the code with one click.

If nothing matches, try a shorter or more general word: the official descriptions use trade terms ("footwear" rather than "shoes").

How HSN codes are structured

HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is the international system for classifying goods. India uses it for customs and GST, extended to 8 digits:

Digits Level Example
2 Chapter 84 — Machinery and mechanical appliances
4 Heading 8471 — Automatic data processing machines (computers)
6 Sub-heading 847130 — Portable computers
8 Tariff item 84713010 — Personal computers

Services use SAC (Services Accounting Code): 6 digits, always starting with 99. For example, 998314 is IT design and development services and 996331 is restaurant services.

How many digits do you need on an invoice?

The number of digits depends on your aggregate turnover in the previous financial year:

Annual turnover HSN digits on tax invoices
Up to ₹5 crore 4 digits (B2B invoices; optional on B2C)
More than ₹5 crore 6 digits on all invoices

The same codes go into the HSN summary (Table 12) of your GSTR-1. Exporters and importers use the full 8-digit code.

GST rates

The GST rate depends on the exact product, so one heading can carry more than one rate. Since the GST rate changes of 22 September 2025, most goods and services fall in the 5% or 18% slab, with 40% for a small set of luxury and sin goods, and some items nil-rated or exempt. Where most items under a heading share one rate, the finder shows it as "GST usually …". Always confirm the rate for your exact product in the CBIC rate notifications or with your CA.

Frequently asked questions

Where does this list come from? From the HSN/SAC master published on the GST portal, the same list the portal uses when you fill the HSN summary in GSTR-1.

Why does a code show no rate? The official list has no rates. The finder shows a usual rate only where one rate covers most of a heading. Where the rate depends on the product, its price or its packaging (pulses, cars, hotel rooms), none is shown.

What if two codes seem to fit? Classification follows the most specific description first, then the material or main use of the product. When in doubt, ask your CA: a wrong code can mean the wrong rate.

Is it free? Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
