Create and import workbooks
Create a blank workbook, import an Excel file, and rename, copy a link to, or delete workbooks.
Start a workbook from scratch or bring in an Excel file, then rename or delete workbooks.
Before you start: creating, importing, renaming and deleting workbooks need Full control on Sheets (Roles page). With less, the buttons are hidden.
Create a blank workbook
- Open Sheets and click New workbook.
- Type a Name (for example "Budget 2026").
- Click Create. The editor opens with a first sheet of columns A to Z.
If you have no workbooks yet, the page says "No workbooks yet" with "Create a workbook or import an Excel file to get started." People without Full control see "Nothing has been shared with you yet."
Import an Excel file
- Click Import .xlsx and choose a
.xlsxfile. - A new workbook opens, named after the file.
What the import does:
- Each Excel sheet becomes a tab (up to 20 tabs).
- Formulas that Axis understands stay live formulas. Others keep the value Excel had calculated.
- Column types are detected from the data: Number, Date, Checkbox (TRUE/FALSE) or Text.
- Imports are limited by your plan's rows per sheet. See Limits.
Rename, copy link, delete
Right-click a row (or use its actions button):
- Open and Open in new tab.
- Rename. Type a new name and click Rename. You can also rename inside the editor by editing the name at the top (needs Full control).
- Copy link. You see "Link copied".
- Delete. Confirm "Delete "" and every sheet in it? This cannot be undone."
Important: deleting a workbook removes every sheet in it and cannot be undone.
Tips
- Two workbooks can have the same name.
- The Size column shows how big the workbook is. Updated shows the time today, or the date.
